The Dedication Ritual

Did you feel that, that shiver of energy, that rush of electricity under your skin, the rattle that hits your soul and excites your heart with a rush of love, joy and excitement?

Then now is the time for you to begin to walk the path. You do not have to follow the typical 1 year and 1 day devotional period, but a programme that works for you, around your schedule, no matter how quiet or busy your life is. Bear in mind, Witchcraft is like any other aspect of life – expect only to get out, what you put in.

Magickal and beautiful times to do dedication rituals are: Dark Moon, Full Moons, Solstices, Sabbaths and Equinoxes. Now, magickal places include and are not limited to parks, beaches, woodlands, mountain peaks, caves, islands if any are near, graveyards where appropriate, but particularly at the cross roads, as the energy and symbolism is profound and generous. As are the spirits of nature that reside in these special places. Let's not forgot that some fabulous deities are often found around the cross roads, such as Lady Hekate.

Found below is the dedication ritual from my book, quite similar to the one I performed:

Dedication Ritual

You will need: A purple candle to represent the Great Spirit

A silver candle to represent the Goddess

A gold candle to represent the God

A white candle for yourself

A favourite incense of your choice to burn (and a holder)

A pen or pencil of your chosen colour (I use black, personally)

A piece of paper

You will need to write down your intention on the piece of paper: “I, (name),

Ask the God, Goddess and Great Spirit to support me in the year and day to come

As I study the Craft of the Wise and awaken the Old ways in myself

I call out to my ancestors, to the ancestors of the Craft

And any and all spirit allies who come in love and light

Who come in perfect love and perfect trust

To come forward and support me in my studies

Please bring me the wisdom and gifts of the Witch

With harm to none, So mote it be”

When you are relaxed, and ready, count down to a relaxed, meditative state and open your heart and mind. When you feel you have relaxed enough, ignite your candles and then read out your intention slip. When you are finished reciting your intention, take some time to sit in silence and witness any sensations, visualisations, sights or emotions that come and go.

Afterwards, thank the Gods and your guides and ancestors for coming forward and helping you to begin this personal journey. Take your intention slip outside if you are not already there and burn it, releasing this spell to the cosmos. You can leave your candles burn out, preferably not your white candle as you can use this for your initiation after your studies are completed.

You are most welcome to utilise this dedication ritual as you see fit, or draw inspiration from it, especially if you do not work with the Spirit-God-Goddess model and have a different format or deity you lean towards. You may perform any preparations that you feel are appropriate for this special occasion. Afterwards I recommend writing down the ritual in a journal for future workings – known as a Book of Shadows (BOS), and also write down your experience.
